Dear Friends,
Kids in Christ is a new ministry for children roughly 4 & 5 years-old during the sermon. Already we have a handful of volunteers! Praise the Lord! The materials will be copied and placed in a bin with dated folders. An outline of how the time will be utilized will be given to you to use as a guide, but basically, we will model prayer, sing praise to our Lord (CD of praise and worship songs), read a bible story from The Beginner’s Bible (Zondervan Publishers: available on Christianbook.com for $9.95 if you’d like your own), discuss the passage, color a coloring page to go with the story, sing closing song (again CD), and closing prayer. The schedule will appear on the nursery schedule for your convenience. We still could use a few more volunteers for the nursery and for Kids in Christ, so spread the word and pray, please! God Bless you and thank you for your service!

In Christ, Tracy.

A New Beginning

Dear Friends in Christ,
The population of Covenant Presbyterian Church is growing in leaps and bounds! What wonderful news! With the increased number of children, so do the special needs of the church increase. As our babies mature into toddlers and then "graduate" from the nursery, many of us parents find ourselves wondering and struggling with what to do with our 4, 5 or 6 year-old child during the 8:30 sermon. Many parents of children this age find that if they keep the little-ones with them, it is a small-scale battle to keep him/her still and quiet. Sometimes, we find ourselves having to leave the sanctuary all together. In my own frailty, I sometimes wonder why I bother at all! I would find myself leaving church tired and feeling more anxious than ever. Well, Praise the Lord! We have the blessing of Reverend Ehlers to begin a program during the 8:30 sermon to help our little evangelists learn about our Creator and be able to move and make a little noise! Ideas are welcome, so email me with yours and I'll tell you mine. By the Grace of God we can make this work together! God bless you!
In Christ,
Tracy Colligan

So, what exactly is Covenant Presbyterian Nursery??

Who can be a volunteer?
The Covenant Presbyterian Church (PCA) nursery is a ministry of the church run by many, many volunteers in the church. Some are the parents of the children, some are grandparents, but many are people who want to serve the Lord and give of their time freely!

“Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise- the fruit of the lips that confess His name. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”Hebrews 13: 15-16

What is the point?
The idea is to allow parents and opportunity to worship our awesome Lord in a peaceful and positive frame of mind. "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, sould, and mind." ABSOLUTELY we do! However for mommies and daddies sometimes this is tough to do during a service with little ones distracting them for various reasons, so we all take turns taking care of the children in the two designated rooms. It is also better for the children because we all know that with their short attention spans, sitting through the entire service quietly and still is VERY difficult. They also need to know that God's Son loves them very much. He even tells us so!

“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these…And He took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them”Mark 10: 14, 16

Where do the children go?
There are two rooms that are in operation during both services and Sunday school which are the Infant Room and the Toddler Room. Those terms are used rather loosely since there really is no exact age in which every child transitions from infancy to toddlerhood. Generally, the Infant Room is for babies from birth to about 18 months and the Toddler Room is for about 18 months to about 3 years old. The infant room also can accomodate nursing mothers who might enjoy privacy during feedings. Both rooms are located to the left of the main doors, just down the hall from the church office.

What else do I need to know?
Below are copied and pasted sections of the Nursery Guidelines brochure. Of Course, if you still have any questions, just ask any voluteer in the nursery. Someone will be able to help you.

Covenant Presbyterian Church
P.C.A.

Covenant Presbyterian Church offers childcare for the Contemporary 8:30 service, Sunday School Hour, and the Traditional 11:00 service. Generally, nursery is extended for other church functions and services provided volunteers are available. We offer two rooms: one for infant to about 18 months of age and the other for about 18 months of age to around 3 years of age.

This is a special ministry that benefits everyone. Mommies and Daddies are provided the opportunity to focus on and worship our gracious and awesome Lord. The young children are exposed to other loving and caring believers and are able to see Jesus in them as well as their parents. Subsequently, those without little ones at home can enjoy the innocence of God’s little ones. What a way to serve God’s family!

This information is for those currently volunteering and for those prayerfully considering offering their services to this wonderful ministry in our church, as well as parents leaving their children in the care of our nursery volunteers.

  1. General Guidelines
    (Both rooms)

    1. Please make every effort to be on time. (families and volunteers alike!)
2.Be sure that all children are signed in indicating all the necessary information. This is for the safety and well-being of these precious little ones.
3.Be sure that the “cubby” number is listed on the sign-in sheet, especially in the infant room where diaper changes and bottle-feeding happen more frequently.
4.It would be greatly appreciated if visiting and adult conversation be held at another time or location. It is best for the children if only the scheduled nursery workers are in the room. Too much talking and too many adults can cause confusion for the children.
5.Please make every effort to clean up & wipe down the tables after your scheduled time to minimize the spreading of germs and to reduce the risk of tripping over the toys. Also, keep in mind that from September to June, the toddler room is used for our Jubilee Preschool, so after the 11:00 service, it is especially important to sweep up the floor and wipe down tables.
6.If at all possible, we respectfully request that a child not be left if he/ she is ill. In the event a child becomes ill during the service, the recorded information on the sign-in sheet will be used to locate the parent(s).
7.If a volunteer is unable to fulfill his/her scheduled obligation, every effort on his/her part is to be made to find a replacement and to notify Tracy Colligan of the change so the master schedule can be updated.
Activity Ideas

1.For the toddlers you may wish to use the TV/VCR during the sermon.
2.If possible, midway through the hour, the children are provided with a small snack. This may be brought from home, especially for food allergies, or may be from the cabinet labeled as such. Remember to say a blessing, please.
3.Coloring pages are available for the toddlers, which are located in the cabinet.
4.Children in both rooms can be read to. There are books in both rooms, but feel free, if you have a story you love about God or the Bible, to share it.
5.Children in both rooms also enjoy movement and singing. Feel free to utilize any music available for those fun activities.
6.When straightening the room, have the little ones help as much as they can by putting the toys in the proper bins and cabinets. Why not get those good habits reinforced here!

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth”2 Timothy 2: 15
A few words of Encouragement!
Many thanks to all the current volunteers for the tireless love and commitment to the children and families of our church. You make it possible for us all to come before the Lord for worship in the proper frame of mind and in peace and assurance. Your service is such a blessing! You are storing up your treasure in heaven!

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust DO NOT destroy, and where thieves DO NOT break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6: 19-21

To all future volunteers, we welcome you and look forward to rewarding fellowship in this precious ministry. May you enjoy the blessing as we already do!

Rockin' around, the Infant Room!

A few weeks ago, a CD player/radio was placed in the Infant Room. It belongs to the nursery! Very soon, look for children's CD's with bible songs and bible stories. If this works out, we'll get a second one and additional CD's for the toddler room. The idea is that the kids can move around and praise the Lord at the same time!

My Dear Friends in Christ,
As you can see, we are in the throws of yet another volunteer shortage. Please pray that the Lord will provide, as HE always does. (It might help to mention our need to other friends in the church as well!) He is good and faithful, and it will all work for good. In the meantime, hang in there! I will continue to try and not schedule you sooner than every 4 or 5 weeks with His help and a lot of prayer, of course! Tracy
